David Penfound

David Penfound is an extraordinary illustrator based in Hampshie, UK. He creates beautiful digital art featuring a huge range of subjects including wildlife, fantasy and space that're truly remarkable.

In our latest Azutura interview, we caught up with David to discuss his wide range of work, his love of the Native American culture, his band and much more.

Hi David, thanks for taking the time to speak to us. Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us a little bit about your life?

Hi there. I started off as a traditional artist 27 years ago and moved into 3D illustration. I live in Hampshire in the UK. I am married with two children and two cats.

When did you get interested in art?

From the moment I could hold a pencil I was interested in drawing, doodling and painting. I started off being into fantasy art and worshipped Boris Vallejo and Rodney Matthews as a boy.

What’s an average day like in the life of David Penfound?

I’m not an early riser but like to be working by 9 am. My studio is at home so I tend to go for a walk first thing and then start the day.

If I get involved in a project, I forget to eat but never forget to drink tea! One day I could be working on a traditional art piece for a jigsaw puzzle and the next I could be working on a 3D project for a tv commercial. Every day is different which I love.

What tools do you use to create your work?

I have shifted from paintbrushes to digital tools,. I use 3dMax, ZBrush, Photoshop and After Effects.

Where do you find inspiration?

Literally everywhere! Because I do all genres, I see inspiration everywhere and in everything.

I am an extreme sports enthusiast and love wakeboarding, paragliding and diving. My hobbies and interests ignite my imagination.

If you had to choose a favourite, which do you prefer, digital or traditional work?

For me, it's digital every time. I never ruin carpets with spilt paint anymore!

That’s a very good point! You’ve said you’re drawn to Native American art. Can you tell us what about this particular culture attracts you?

There is so much mystery surrounding the Native American people. Their beliefs and spirituality are awe-inspiring.

Are you still playing with the band The Torn Off Strips?

Yes, I am and we are now in our twelfth year together. We are busy every weekend at parties, weddings and corporate functions. It’s great fun and I keep up with my drumming skills.

Other than house pets, what’s your favourite animal and why?

I love wolves and owls, purely because they are slightly mysterious and both species have amazing eyes.

What’s your favourite thing to happen in your career so far?

Honestly, it's seeing my artwork on products all over the world. I have fans posting pictures of products they've bought from Australia, Japan and India. Even NASA used one of my images for their 50th-anniversary celebrations. It gives me a real buzz to see where my art ends up.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what career path would you have gone down?

I have no doubt I would be in a full-time band playing the drums, wherever the music took me.

What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator?

Don't limit yourself to one genre and don't be too precious with your work. You will get criticism but you have to rise above it and believe in yourself.
